Merafong owes Eskom almost R700m

Eskom held talks with the new mayor over our municipality’s escalating debt earlier this week.

The national energy provider said earlier this week that the debt owed to it by the Merafong City Local Municipality has accumulated to just under R700m because of poor and irregular payments.

During a meeting between Eskom and the new executive mayor, Nozuko Best, the municipality however made an undertaking that it will come up with plans to manage this huge account. This meeting was held on February 16.

“We anticipate a good working relationship with the municipality and to assist where possible to guard against the recurrent delays in payment. The municipality has pledged to put together a payment arrangement proposal which we will review as well as pay their current amount on time,” says Eskom’s senior manager for customer services in Gauteng, Daphne Mokwena.
