Mineworker dies at Gauteng gold mine

A 'bump' or seismic jolt is likely to have caused the incident in which 17 other miners sustained serious injuries.

A mineworker died in an accident at Blyvoor Gold mine in Carletonville, west of Johannesburg, yesterday while several of his colleagues were injured.

Several ambulances and a helicopter were called to the mine at around midday after several miners were injured. Some miners were also trapped underground, but were luckily rescued.

One miner was killed during the incident, while 17 mine workers were taken to Fountain and Lenmed private hospitals. The injuries of three of the injured are serious.

According to the mine’s general manager, Louis Lamsley, he was informed that a ‘bump’ or seismic jolt caused the accident. He is currently not at the mine due to illness.

The identity of the mineworker who passed away is not yet known to the publication.
