An attempted cash-in-transit (CIT) heist in Brakpan on Friday resulted in the death of a motorist.

The CIT vehicle’s driver and a crew member were also injured during the incident, which took place along Van Dyk Road near Carnival City at around 18:00.

Capt Pearl van Staad, spokesperson for the Brakpan police, told the Herald a G4S vehicle was rammed by a white Mercedes-Benz C200. The impact caused the cash van to roll.

“The vehicle rolled over a private vehicle and the occupants were injured,” she said.

A 44-year-old man died on scene, while his wife and children were injured. No money was taken from the van and the would-be robbers fled empty-handed.

Two cartridges were, however, found at the scene. The Mercedes-Benz used in the attempt was reportedly stolen in Jeppe. The culprits also used two other vehicles, an Audi and a Volkswagen Golf.

“No firearms were taken from the GS4 Security guards. They were taken to the Netcare Sunward Park Hospital for treatment of head injuries,” said van Staad.

Cases of attempted CIT heist and culpable homicide have been opened.
