Motorists warned of congestion and dangers on N3 toll route

Holiday traffic on the N3 toll route remains heavy, with weather, public transport crashes and driver behaviour adding risks.

Consistently heavy traffic has been recorded on the N3 toll route since the start of the summer holiday, with conditions expected to remain busy in the days ahead, particularly heading towards Durban.

According to The Witness, N3 Toll Concession (N3TC) COO Thania Dhoogra said traffic volumes of between 12 000 and 13 000 vehicles per day have been recorded at the Mooi and De Hoek toll plazas during peak periods. Similar volumes are expected tomorrow.

Northbound traffic heading towards Gauteng is expected to increase from Sunday as holidaymakers begin their return journeys ahead of the New Year.

Weather complicates travel

Holiday travel has also been marked by unpredictable weather, including frequent thunderstorms, heavy rainfall and mist, resulting in poor visibility.

“Be prepared for possible congestion and delays, and make allowances for unexpected events when planning your trip. Remain alert and patient when conditions become challenging,” said Dhoogra.

Concerns over public transport crashes

Dhoogra expressed concern over the high number of public transport vehicles, particularly minibus taxis, involved in crashes on the N3 Toll Route.

“A single public transport crash often results in multiple serious injuries or fatalities,” said Dhoogra.

Crash data shows that about 81% of incidents on the route are caused by human error, while vehicle-related issues such as tyre bursts and brake failures account for roughly 9%. Rain was cited as a contributing factor in 21.7% of crashes recorded this year.

Crashes occurring during adverse weather or at night tend to be more severe due to reduced visibility, fatigue and difficulty judging speed and distance.

Road safety reminders

N3TC urged all motorists to obey the rules of the road and adhere to safety regulations.

Aggressive and impatient driving behaviour, including tailgating, speeding, frequent lane changes and flashing of headlights are serious road safety threats that increase both crash risks and have legal consequences.

“Mastering safe driving skills, staying informed, remaining patient and alert, and ensuring your vehicle is in good condition are the real game-changers for a safe and trouble-free holiday journey.

“Let’s all commit to making this a peaceful and joyous time for everyone by driving with Ubuntu and sharing the N3 Toll Route responsibly.”
