Mpumalanga girl (11) shot: One accused granted R10 000 bail

The girl was travelling in a minivan with her siblings when she was shot in the back.

Two men applied for bail after their arrest earlier in April following their alleged involvement in the recent shooting of an 11-year-old girl in White River.

Pieter Kruger (62) was granted R10 000 bail during his appearance in the White River Magistrate’s Court on Monday. Lourens de Bruyn (39) was denied bail.

Their arrest followed a shooting incident on April 10 when the young girl was shot in the back while travelling with her family in a minivan on the R537. She was rushed to the Mediclinic Nelspruit for treatment

The Lowvelder previously reported that, according to the victim’s father who wished to remain anonymous, his daughter was travelling in Mbombela’s direction in the back of a Mercedes-Benz Viano, next to her four siblings when the incident occurred.

He said his wife was in the passenger seat and his 19-year-old son had been driving.

De Bruyn and Kruger first appeared in court on April 12 on charges of attempted murder and the discharging of a firearm in a built-up area or public place.

Mpumalanga’s National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson, Monica Nyuswa, says the case is postponed to June 2 for further investigation.

The cause of the shooting and how it unfolded will be subject to court proceedings.

The victim’s father did not wish to comment any further on his daughter’s condition.
