Mpumalanga hammer attack victim speaks out

After three people were killed by a hammer-wielding teenager in Secunda, Mpumalanga last week, the fiancée of one of the victims has recounted the incident.

Karin Louw, pregnant fiancée of Lourens de Lange, who died in hospital following the attack, told Ridge Times the incident, which took place on April 17, came as a complete surprise.

“We were walking with our two-year-old child in a pram when the man approached us. He walked normal, and we did not suspect anything. He suddenly swore at Lourens and hit him with a hammer over the head,” Louw said.

She added her fiancé fell to the floor and was struck three more times by 19-year-old Adam Muller. Louw then ran to help De Lange, but she was also hit in the head with the hammer.

“[Muller] stood still and looked at me until the blood began streaming down my face, then he walked away.”

The couple were then taken to the Evander Hospital for treatment. De Lange, who sustained serious head injuries, was later transferred to the Witbank Hospital, where he died. Four other people, including a pregnant woman, had also allegedly been attacked by Muller. One of the four victims later died.

Muller was arrested on Friday morning after he was stopped and apprehended by a traffic officer. He appeared in the Secunda Magistrates’ Court on Monday and was remanded in custody until his next appearance on April 28.
