Mpumalanga police hunt for alleged serial killer

Police are investigating the possibility of a serial killer operating in the Malalane area of Mpumalanga after the third discovery of a woman’s body in a sugar-cane field in less than a month.

Provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlalala said all bodies had been burnt beyond recognition. The latest body was discovered yesterday. It appears the victim was suffocated,Corridor Gazette reported.

Another body was found on Monday. The deceased, Promise Madonsela, 29, had allegedly gone missing in Komatipoort earlier. It was not clear how her identity had been confirmed.
Mohlalala added the deceased had been found not far from where Tuesday`s body was discovered.

“Our dog unit was summoned to fine-comb the area for more possible dead bodies. It has not been established yet whether the women had been raped before they were killed,” he said.
Mohlalala said the first body was discovered on July 22.

“We appeal to all people, especially women, not to catch rides with strangers because our preliminary probe suggests that the killer is using a vehicle,” he added.

In a separate incident, an alleged serial killer accused of murdering four women and burning one of his friends to death was referred for mental observation in February.

He allegedly tied the underwear of two of his victims around their necks. The victims were either dumped in the bushes or into the Bon Accord dam.

His alleged victims are Maria Pilore, 60, Juliet Mokgatla, 69, Praise Nyarai, 29, and a woman who was never identified.
