A prison warden suspected of being in possession of drugs at Paxton Correctional Centre in eMalahleni, Mpumalanga, is still out on bail.

He appeared in court last Monday after being arrested when substances believed to be drugs were allegedly found in his pockets.

He is expected to re-appear in court tomorrow.

The 58-year-old man allegedly had 93 tables and three sachets, with an estimated street value of R15 000, in his pocket, says provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala.

Mohlala explains that the warden’s supervisor became suspicious when he visited the main gate, at which the warden was working, and noticed that the warden’s pockets were full.

The supervisor searched the man’s pockets, allegedly found the substances, and arrested him.

He was later released on R3 000 bail.

Mpumalanga SAPS commissioner Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela commended the vigilance displayed by the supervisor. “We cannot allow our own to corrupt inmates who are receiving correctional assistance.”
