Mpumalanga town rocked by two heists in a day

Police in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga are looking for suspects after two cash-in-transit vehicles were shot at and robbed of an undisclosed amount of money yesterday.

Provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said the first incident happened at about 2.30pm yesterday near the traffic circle on Airport Road, whereby a Protea Coin vehicle from White River was shot at and pushed off the road by two BMWs until it came to a standstill, Mpumalanga News reported.

“The occupants of the BMWs then ordered the driver and his two assistants to open the back of their van, and they took an undisclosed amount of cash, the victim’s cellphones and firearms and fled the scene on their runaway car. The registration number is not known,” he said.

The second incident happened at about 6pm on the same road between Casambo Guesthouse and the Gwede Mantashe village.

“The G4S vehicle from Nelspruit which was coming from the direction of Emoyeni Mall towards Nelspruit when it was also shot at until it came to a standstill by unknown suspects driving a Ford Ranger,” Mohlala said.

The assailants then ordered the security guard to open the door, forced them to lie down on the ground, disarmed them and took an undisclosed amount of money.  The suspects of the second heist proceeded to explode the cash in transit vehicle and fled the scene, he added.

It is unclear if both heists were carried out by the same group of suspects.

“We have opened cases of cash-in-transit robbery. Police are looking for the suspects and anyone with information can contact the White River on 013-7500888 or 082 449 0332 or the Nelspruit police on 013-7591001/1305/1008,” he said.
