Municipal Elections 2021: What to expect on Election Day

WATCH: Journalist Izak du Plessis has compiled a useful video, using information taken from the Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa’s website. It tells you everything you need to know about Election Day.

On Monday (November 1), South Africa’s 26 228 975 registered voters will get the opportunity to choose who governs their towns and cities for the next five years – and they will do so in the midst of a global pandemic.

South Africa is not alone in having to overcome the challenges of gathering so many people in central locations on one day, while ensuring Covid-19 risks are minimised. According to the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance, ‘at least 120 countries or territories have held national elections or referendums’ between February 21, 2020, and October 21, 2021.
