Murder accused appears in court, bible in hand, cross stitched on his back
A Trichardt man who is accused of murdering his ex-girlfriend and setting her house on fire, appeared in court in Secunda in a shirt with a cross stitched on the back and a bible in hand.
Christopher Watson is accused of the brutal murder of Angelique Fourie (27), the mother of his child, who was stabbed to death in November 2021.
He briefly appeared in the Secunda Magistrate’s Court last week, April 26, where his case was transferred to the High Court in Delmas Mpumalanga. His trial is on the court roll from October 31 to November 4.
He is facing charges of murder, arson and defeating the ends of justice.
Fourie’s body was found in her home in a Terra Nova Village complex in Trichardt on November 7, 2021.
It is alleged that Watson showed up at Fourie’s house after drinking at a local pub. She was busy having coffee with a neighbour at the time. After an altercation the neighbour allegedly left the house.
He later returned and discovered that the house was on fire. Bystanders managed to extinguish the fire and found Fourie’s body in the bathroom. She had a wound to her neck and was declared dead on the scene.
Her autopsy revealed that she had been stabbed multiple times.
Watson fled the scene, dropped off his child (then about three) at his sister’s house and later handed himself over to the Norkem Park Police Station in Kempton Park on November 9, 2021.
His bail application was abandoned in the Secunda Magistrate’s Court on November 17, 2021 and he had since been held at Bethal Prison.
Watson’s appearance was the same as the previous time, with a bible in hand and the same buttoned-up navy blue shirt with a cross on the back.
He again made brief contact (hand touch) with his loved ones who were there to support him.
Fourie’s friends and family were also in court wearing shirts which read “Stop GBV against women and children” on the back and “Justice for Angie” in the front.
