Music icon Albert Mazibuko laid to rest in KZN
Mazibuko will be remembered as being one of the first members of Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
The late Albert Mazibuko, a retired member of the world-renowned music group Ladysmith Black Mambazo, was laid to rest this morning (April 18) in Ntabamhlophe, Estcourt reports Northern Natal News.
He passed away on Easter Sunday (April 5) at the age of 77.
A life dedicated to music
Born in the Embuzweni area in Ladysmith, Mazibuko was known for his passion and commitment to music. Many described his life as one devoted to cultural excellence and the promotion of traditional South African sounds.
As part of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, he contributed to a legacy that earned global recognition, including multiple Grammy Awards over more than five decades.
Honouring a cultural icon
Mazibuko was widely respected for helping to put Ladysmith and the broader Estcourt region on the international map through music. His work inspired many young artists and preserved the tradition of isicathamiya music.
Community members, fellow artists, members of Ladysmith Black Mambazo and officials from the KwaZulu-Natal government attended his funeral to pay their last respects.
Final farewell
The funeral proceedings began with a private burial, followed by a formal programme.
Family, friends and supporters gathered to celebrate Albert Mazibuko’s life and legacy, remembering him as a humble and dedicated artist.
