Newcastle K9 Unit defuses ‘explosive’ situation

Police were on the lookout for the vehicle after they received a tip-off.

Two suspects have been arrested, after being caught transporting explosives in their vehicle recently.

Lizzy Arumugam, from Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications, explaines that K9 Unit members were patrolling Albert Wessels Drive when they received a tip-off.

The lead detailed a vehicle traveling from Madadeni to Newcastle, possibly carrying explosives.

“The K9 Unit was immediately on the lookout for the vehicle until they spotted it,” adds Arumugam.

Upon a search of the vehicle, SAPS officials found explosives and detonators. Both occupants of the vehicle were arrested and are currently being detained.

It is not yet clear what the explosives were intended for – Arumugam says an official investigation has been launched into the incident.
