No arrests following the death of a deputy principal
An unconfirmed number of suspects are still at large after the deputy principal of Esselen Primary School in Phoenix, KwaZulu-Natal died after he was assaulted in a hijacking.
Rathilal Sooklall, 52, deputy principal of Esselen Primary School and a father of two from Parkgate, in Verulam had been travelling in his car when he was accosted by unknown men at gunpoint. The men proceeded to assault Sooklall, hitting him with the butt of the gun on his head, Phoenix Sunreported.
Sooklall was rushed to hospital but died a while later in ICU, succumbing to his injuries.
Former pupil Udir Chaturi said he was shocked and saddened by the news of the passing of his beloved teacher.
“Mr Sooklall was perhaps the best of the teachers whom I knew in my primary school years. I still carry the lessons he taught me in life today,” said Chaturi.
Sooklall began his teaching career in 1984 and had been a dedicated teacher for the past 31 years. He is survived by his two sons, Yashvir and Rivash Sooklall.
No arrests have been made.
In a separate incident, a teacher at Hoërskool Centurion collapsed and died while marking Grade 12 papers in Pretoria, Gauteng in November last year.
The unidentified teacher was marking Mechanical Technology papers at a Grade 12 marking centre when he collapsed and died.
