No arrests in KZN taxi owner’s murder

Police are yet to make an arrest after the murder of a taxi owner in the eMadadeni area of Newcastle, in KwaZulu-Natal.

According to police spokesperson Captain Shooz Magudulela, Khuzi Hanson Khumalo, a well-known taxi owner, was gunned down at his home in Section 5, eMadadeni on Sunday afternoon, Newcastle Advertiser reported.

“It is alleged that the deceased was attacked with a rifle and shot dead in his yard,” said Magudulela. His body was riddled with bullet holes, and 12 casings were found outside his home, with a further three cases found within his yard. “It is hard to determine if the incident was related to taxi violence, as investigations are still ongoing,” Magudulela said. He added the case had since been transferred to the Serious and Violent Crimes Unit in Durban.

In another incident, a 30-year-old man believed to be a taxi owner was shot dead on Pomona Road in Kempton Park, on the East Rand in March. Police said Themba Zungu was travelling with his brother when he was shot and killed in his silver VW Polo by suspects who had allegedly followed him in a white Mercedez Benz AMG with blue lights. Zungu was declared dead on the scene by paramedics after two bullets were fired into his chest. Kempton police spokesperson Captain Jethro Mtshali said two bags were stolen from the deceased’s car.
