No arrests yet after KZN Markham store robbery

Police are searching for two armed suspects after they allegedly robbed a Markham store in the Vryheid CBD, KwaZulu-Natal.

Provincial police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said the suspects walked into the retail store and held the manager and two employees at gunpoint at about 10.45am on Sunday, Vryheid Herald reported.

The victims were tied up using duct tape, and the manager was told to hand over the keys to the safe. It is alleged the suspects made off with R20 862 in cash and cellphones and tablets worth of R10 000.

Zwane said no injuries were sustained during the incident. A case of business robbery was opened at Vryheid Police Station, and no arrest has been made at this stage.

Last month a suspect was shot dead by an EMPD officer on the N12 highway, near the Rondebult Bridge, in Boksburg, Gauteng after he had just robbed an Edgars store. Boksburg North police spokesperson Lieutenant Juanita Coetzer said the deceased and his accomplice stole clothes and cellphones and drove away in a white Corsa bakkie.

“While on the highway, the two men were pulled over by the metro police officers. The officers who stopped them were not aware of the Mayfield Square robbery,” added Coetzer.

The passenger in the suspect’s vehicle got out to meet an EMPD officer, who was approaching their vehicle. EMPD spokesperson Kobeli Mokheseng said the driver of the car tried to bribe the officer with R100 after claiming he did not have a licence.

Mokheseng said the passenger of the Opel approached the passenger in the EMPD vehicle with a gun and tried to disarm him.

“The driver of the metro police vehicle noticed this and shot at him, fatally wounding the man. The suspect died on the scene after he succumbed to his wounds,” added Mokheseng.
