Off-duty metro police officer gunned down in Ekurhuleni

Two metro police officials have been killed in Ekurhuleni in the past 10 days.

An off-duty Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) officer was gunned down in KwaThema this morning.

According to an article published by African Reporter, while details about what happened are still sketchy, Zweli Dlamini, Ekurhuleni Metro’s spokesperson, says it’s believed that the officer was attacked by two people in front of a spaza shop just after 08:00.

The men shot the officer and stole his private firearm.

This shooting comes hot on the heels of the killing of an EMPD traffic warden in Thembisa on January 29.

“We strongly condemn these senseless killings of officers. These are men and women who have taken it upon themselves to serve and protect our people and their property, yet they seem to become targets for criminals.

“We sincerely hope that arrests are made speedily so that those behind these incidents can face the full might of the law,” says the MMC for Community Safety, Sizakele Masuku.

He appeals to the public to co-operate and share critical information that may assist to help the police to resolve the crimes.

Police are following leads, but no one has been arrested yet.
