One killed in uMhlanga drive-by shooting

Multiple shots were fired with high-calibre weapons at two men on Lighthouse Road.

Chaos erupted on Lighthouse Road in uMhlanga in KwaZulu-Natal last night following a fatal drive-by shooting involving occupants from a silver BMW opening fire on the driver of another silver BMW.

According to Reaction Unit South Africa, they received a call at around 20:34 from a frantic caller.

The BMW, with the victims inside, came to a standstill after it collided with a lamp pole.

Several first responders and security companies arrived at the scene, where they found that the driver of the vehicle was already dead while a passenger was left in critical condition with gunshot wounds to his neck and leg.

“Two patients had sustained multiple gunshot wounds, with one patient being fatally wounded. Reports from the scene indicate that [the occupant of] a passing vehicle had opened fire at the two men before departing at high speed,” says Kimberly Liell-Cock, operations manager for Medi Response.

It is suspected that the shots were fired with high-calibre weapons as several spent cartridges were found at the scene. The name of the deceased has not been released.

The scene was handed over to SAPS for further investigation.
