One of the three house robbers shot dead in Sandton
Cases of house robbery and attempted murder are under investigation after one of the three suspects was shot dead during a shootout in Strathavon in Sandton, Johannesburg this morning.
Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said the three suspects robbed a house in a complex on Linden Street in Strathavon just before 8am, Sandton Chronicle reported.
Dlamini added the victim pressed the panic button and notified authorities. One suspect jumped over the walls of other complexes in the area. The suspects stole a laptop, jewellery and money.
Bramley police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said one suspect was shot.
“Police and flying squad managed to track down the two other suspects. One was arrested on Helen Road, and another was fatally injured in a complex on Helen Road,” said Dlamimi.
The arrested suspect is charged with attempted murder after firing shots at the police and house robbery. Dlamini said all of the stolen items were recovered.
Police are searching for the third suspect. A security guard at a nearby hotel said 10 shots were fired at about 8am.
Eyewitness Kyle Marais said he was travelling on Grayston Drive and saw a police officer on the corner of Grayston Drive and Linden Street seemingly preventing motorists from going down Linden Street.
“There was police presence on Grayston Drive, and I heard two gunshots fired as I passed by,” added Marais.
In a separate incident, a 30-year-old alleged robber was shot dead on the Tweefontein farm plot in Polokwane, in Limpopo last Thursday.
Polokwane police spokesperson Captain Ntobeng Phala said shots were fired, and in the process one of the suspects, 30, was shot twice in the chest. He was declared dead on the scene.
