Orlando Pirates star found guilty of assaulting ex-girlfriend

Superstar Thembinkosi Lorch was arrested following an incident that happened at his place of residence in Midrand.

The Randburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday found Orlando Pirates star Thembinkosi Lorch guilty of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The case stems from a complaint filed with the Midrand Police in September 2020 by his then-girlfriend, which resulted in his arrest and subsequent release on R2 000 bail.

According to the NPA statement, the victim said she was visiting Lorch when he left her at his home to go out with his friend. She messaged him to return her car keys. On arrival, an argument ensued and Lorch became violent towards her and started to strangle her, beating her while pulling her up and down. She called for help and his friend came to her rescue.

Regional NPA spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane says that during the trial, the state prosecutor argued that the medical evidence corroborated the evidence of the complainant.

“The accused did not have any injuries, which meant that he was the aggressor. The accused and his witness did not create a good impression in court and appeared to not be credible witnesses.”

Lorch is expected to appear in court on July 28 for sentencing proceedings.
