Our son is not a monster: Mpumalanga hammer killer’s mom

Adam Muller, who was arrested for the deaths of two men after he attacked five people with a hammer in Secunda, Mpumalanga, had been booked into drug rehabilitation centres before the incident – but relapsed each time.

This according to his mother, who added the Muller family tried to seek help many times, but few people or institutions were willing to help, Ridge Times reported.

“Despite our never-ending efforts to help him, he went back to the wrong friends and drugs every time. We did everything we could to help him. We took him for therapy, rehabilitation, placed him under house arrest, but to no avail,” she said.

Muller, 23, was reportedly taken to a psychiatrist in eMalahleni about a year ago. The psychiatrist advised the family to take him for psychiatric treatment.

“Our son is not a monster; he is a young man who needed help. We are very sorry for the families of the two men who lost their lives, as well as the other people who were attacked,” she said.

“He was a child with a problem, and he is going to pay for it, and we realise he is going to be locked up. We just hope he gets help now, and we believe the law will take its course,” she added.

Adam Muller was arrested after going on a rampage in the Secunda CBD, attacking five people, including a pregnant woman. According to eyewitnesses, Muller bludgeoned two men in the Lynco area before moving to other parts of the town.

His victim Themba Shabalala, 45, died on the day, while Lourens de Lange died three days after he was declared brain dead.

Muller has since appeared twice in the Secunda Magistrates’ Court. His trial is still ongoing.
