Over 200 Bloemfontein learners fall ill in food poisoning outbreak

Over 200 learners fell ill from suspected food poisoning at Kagisho Secondary School during a matric study camp, with eight still under medical observation.

A food poisoning outbreak at Kagisho Secondary School in Bloemfontein over the weekend left about 200 learners sick. The learners were attending a weekend matric study camp when several began showing symptoms.

Bloemfontein Courant reports Free State Department of Health spokesperson Mondli Mvambi said the affected learners are receiving treatment at various hospitals.

“On Sunday afternoon, several learners began reporting symptoms consistent with food poisoning. By Monday, the number of affected individuals had risen to 214, with symptoms including nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, and fever. Immediate medical attention was required, and learners were transported to local health facilities.”

Mvambi added that authorities are monitoring the situation. “The Outbreak Response team is surveilling the situation to determine the scope of the outbreak and respond to any emerging developments. Control measures are being implemented to prevent further spread of illness. Medical treatment and care were provided to all affected individuals,” he said.

He concluded that eight learners remain in the casualty department, awaiting results from blood tests. They are receiving intravenous fluids and are showing no signs of serious illness. Updates will be provided as the situation develops.
