Passenger dies on FlySafair flight from Durban to Johannesburg

FlySafair confirmed that counselling services have been arranged for passengers and crew after a man passed away on one of its planes.

FlySafair says it is conducting an internal review after a passenger died on board flight FA417 from Durban to Johannesburg on Sunday.

The Witness reports that the airline confirmed that staff had been concerned about the passenger’s condition before departure from King Shaka International Airport.

The man was assessed by a medical team at the airport and cleared to travel. However, during the flight, his condition worsened.

Cabin crew, supported by medical professionals who were among the passengers, attempted to stabilise him. Despite their efforts, the man died shortly before the aircraft landed at OR Tambo International Airport.

FlySafair spokesperson Kirby Gordon said counselling had been offered to traumatised passengers and crew.

We recognise that this was distressing for our customers and crew, and we are offering professional counselling services as part of our support.

The airline has also initiated an internal review into the incident.

Crews are trained to manage medical emergencies until professional help is available, and FlySafair said it would continue to examine how its protocols can be strengthened.

“Our thoughts are with the passenger’s family during this very difficult time. We also want to thank those passengers who stepped forward to assist our crew,” said Gordon.
