Pietermaritzburg staff kicked out as government fails to pay rent

A building owner who has not received his rent for months has forced government employees to leave the property and has locked the gates.

 

As National Treasury’s austerity measures begin to derail key government programmes, KZN social development employees were forced to vacate the department’s service delivery offices in the uMkhambathini Municipality, outside Pietermaritzburg, after the department defaulted on its rental payments.

After not receiving rent from the department for several months, the owner of the building — which is located in Camperdown — kicked out the department’s staff before locking the property’s gates.

When The Witness visited the offices this week, vendors selling fruits close to the department’s now deserted offices said the premises has been vacant since last Friday.
