Pinetown robbery suspect killed during shootout with police

One suspect managed to flee while three were arrested.

One of the suspects who was chased by police after a business robbery was shot and killed on Saturday afternoon, (10 October).

KZN police spokesperson, Col Thembeka Mbele said officers were alerted about the robbery and on arrival they were informed that the suspects boarded a minibus taxi after fleeing with an undisclosed amount of money and cellphones.

She said the taxi was intercepted at the corner of Glenugie and Kings roads where four men and a woman alighted and a shootout ensued.

“One man was fatally shot, one managed to flee and three were arrested.

“Police recovered three firearms and four cellphones. The suspects were taken to Pinetown police station for detention,” said Mbele.

The arrested suspects are expected to appear in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court today, 12 October.

“They are facing charges of attempted murder, business robbery and possession of firearms and ammunition,” added Mbele.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Thulani Gonya said he was thrilled that police officers were not injured while faced with brazen criminals.
