Police and security bosses move to ease festive congestion at Lebombo border

National security and law enforcement leaders inspected festive season operations at the Lebombo border post as authorities sought to ease congestion.

Members of the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (Natjoints) joined forces with various law enforcement officials yesterday to inspect festive season operations at the Lebombo border post.

Lowvelder reports that Natjoints leadership engaged with officials and identified feasible solutions to ease pressure at the border as travellers flocked to Mozambique ahead of Christmas Day. The visit forms part of Natjoints’ efforts to channel resources to areas where they are most needed, while also ensuring that law enforcement agencies deal decisively with crime during the holiday season.

The team also engaged with members of the public to better understand their experiences.

Policing plans under review

In terms of policing, acting provincial police commissioner Major General Dr Zeph Mkhwanazi will continue to assess the effectiveness of the Safer Festive Season plans to ensure that residents and holidaymakers are, and feel, safe.

When questioned further by Lowvelder about what the new solutions entail, police spokesperson Mpho Nonyane-Mpe said details could not be shared as they relate to security matters.

“However, the Border Management Authority’s operational solutions are aimed at ensuring that travellers reach their destinations safely and in a timely manner,” she said.

Motorists have, however, continued to voice their frustration on social media today, citing that traffic remains congested when heading into Mozambique. They do note that driving from Mozambique into South Africa is not an issue.
