Police arrest grandson after finding grandmother’s body

A man buried his grandmother without informing family members and then collected her pension money.

The Bloemfontein K9 Unit, Bloemfontein Local Criminal Record Centre, together with Tseseng police successfully exhumed the body of an 88-year-old woman that was buried in a shallow grave inside her yard at Malekunutu Village, allegedly by her grandson aged 32.

According to police spokesperson Mmako Mophiring, it is alleged that on 12 July community members became anxious when they did not see the elderly woman at her house for days and approached the police to report her as missing.

“Police, together with the community, including Anti-Stock Theft members, began with the search. The grandson started running away from the community and the police when he realised they were searching for his granny. The team finally caught the young man who was questioned and it was established that he buried the granny’s body inside the yard,” said Mophiring.

Mophiring added that it is alleged that the granny was sick and passed on.

“The grandson, therefore without burial money, buried the old woman without informing neither family members nor the police even though he collected the granny’s pension money. It is reported that the granny was last seen on June 23, 2023.”

The suspect has been arrested for defeating the ends of justice and violation of a corpse. The post-mortem is yet to be conducted to establish the cause of death.
