Police high-speed chase turns into a shootout in Pretoria

A total of three suspects were arrested Tuesday morning following a high-speed chase by police. They will appear at the Pretoria North magistrate’s court on Wednesday, facing charges of possession of a suspected hijacked motor vehicle, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation (HAWKS) spokesperson, Colonel Katlego Mogale, said the man was part of the trio who were arrested after a high-speed chase by the police on Tuesday morning.

“Three suspects, aged between 28 and 36, were arrested this morning following a high-speed chase and shootout in Rama City near Ga-Rankuwa,” Mogale said.

Mogale said the police received information about a white Polo using blue lights in the north of Pretoria.

“The members of the tactical operations management section, Tracker connect, DBK risk group and crime intelligence acted on the information and members were deployed strategically to intercept the vehicle.“

Mogale said when the suspects realised the police were on their trail, they sped off towards Ga-Rankuwa.

“The suspects fired shots at the police during the high-speed chase and the officers returned fire. The suspects lost control of their vehicle and it overturned,” she said.

“One suspect sustained gunshot wounds and received medical attention on the scene,” she said.

“Two unlicensed firearms, cellphones and cash were recovered.”

Mogale said the investigations would continue, while suspects were set to appear at the Pretoria North magistrate’s court on Wednesday, 21 April.

They face charges of possession of a suspected hijacked motor vehicle, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

“There is a possibility that the suspects can be linked to other robberies and hijackings in the Akasia area.”
