Police officer shot and killed in Alexandra

Gauteng Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Elias Mawela said the province has instituted the 72-Hour Activation plan and mobilised all the necessary resources needed to investigate the incident.

Alexandra police officer Sergeant Moshela Mokgoba was shot and killed in Alexandra on the night of 23 March following a shootout with unknown suspects.

According to Colonel Brenda Muridili of the office of the National Commissioner of the South African Police Service, it is believed that Mokgoba and a colleague were approaching a suspicious car when shots were fired from inside the car.

“The two officers were tailing the known vehicle when it stopped at a traffic light which is when the officers approached the vehicle and a shootout ensued injuring and killing one of the officers,” said Muridili.

Muridili added that an investigation had been launched and the suspects would be brought to book.

The National Commissioner of the South African Police Service Lieutenant General Elias Mawela has sent his condolences to the family and friends of Mokgoba.

“The province has already instituted the 72-hour activation plan and mobilised all the necessary resources needed to investigate this incident,” said Mawela.

Mawela added that he had been assured by the province that they were giving the family of the deceased all the support they needed during this time of their bereavement.

The members at the station were also being counselled by the police’s Employee Health and Wellness.
