A police officer is recovering in hospital after being shot and injured in Wynberg, Johannesburg last night, July 10, while responding to shop looting incidents.
This is according to provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Mathapelo Peters.
Metro police spokesperson Wayne Minnaar confirmed shops on the periphery of Kew and Wynberg were looted last night. There is some speculation these incidents are opportunistic, with people taking advantage of the unrest following former president Jacob Zuma’s incarceration. It’s alleged the looters targeted the shops of foreign nationals.

According to Peters, a number of arrests have been made, and she added, “So far the situation in Alex is a lot calmer though we cannot guarantee it holding for long.”
One person is said to have been shot dead in Jeppe but the police said they did not have any more information at this time.
Updates to follow as the situation develops.
Earlier today, on July 11, motorists were advised to exercise extreme caution along the N3 highway following reports of vehicle stoning near London Road.
