Police officers arrested for ‘stealing’ water pump
Two Mpumalanga police constables are expected back in the Ogies Magistrates’ Court next month to face charges of theft and defeating the ends of justice after they allegedly stole a water pump from an unidentified man.
It is alleged the duo attended to a complaint, where a man reported that his water pump had been stolen. He then requested that the two police constables accompany him to a person selling water pumps to confirm if it was the one belonging to the complainant, Witbank News reported.
Upon arrival, it is alleged the complainant stated the pump was not his, but the police constables seized it together with a welding machine.
The constables then told the man who was found with the items to bring proof of purchase, then they would hand the items back to him.
On Monday, April 10, the man went to the police station with the proof of purchase to claim back his belongings, but it was discovered the items were not recorded in the exhibit register.
A case of theft was opened by the complainant for investigation.
On further investigation, it was discovered the police constables took the items, and they were arrested on Monday, April 13.
They were released on R1 000 bail each the next day, and the case was postponed to May 18 pending further investigation.
