Police search for suspects after 8 killed in Umlazi mass shooting

KZN police have launched a manhunt after eight people were shot dead at an Umlazi informal settlement.

Police in KZN have launched a manhunt for suspects who shot and killed eight people at Zama informal settlement at U Section in Umlazi, Durban, last night.

The Witness reports that KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda says at the scene, eight people, six men and two women, aged between 22 and 40, were found lying lifeless with multiple gunshot wounds.

“It is reported that the victims were inside the dwelling when an unknown number of suspects entered and opened fire, killing them at the scene. Investigations into the possible motive of the killings are underway, and police have launched a manhunt for the suspects,” adds Netshiunda.

KZN Premier Thami Ntuli, joined by provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, will this morning visit the scene of the mass murder.

“The visit comes as part of urgent efforts by the provincial government and law enforcement agencies to respond to the increasing levels of violent crime and ensure that justice is swiftly served.

“Premier Ntuli will receive a full briefing on the circumstances surrounding the incident and assess the immediate interventions being undertaken by the South African Police Service,” says the Premier’s office in a statement.

Police are appealing to anyone with information that can assist in the investigation to contact the nearest police station or call the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111.
