Police vow impartial probe into UFS student’s tragic hit-and-run death

Free State premier MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae has promised the grieving family of Kgethang Kgotso Khaeane that ‘no one is above the law’ amid growing public outcry.

Bloemfontein police are assessing highly sensitive allegations circulating online following the horrific death of University of the Free State (UFS) student Kgethang Kgotso Khaeane, who was allegedly run over repeatedly by a vehicle.

The Bloemfontein Courant reports that the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Free State stressed that all cases are investigated impartially, regardless of the occupation or status of anyone who may be implicated in the tragedy.

Police confirmed that a culpable homicide case was opened after the incident in Tau Street, Bloemanda, during the early hours of July 5.

Forensic evidence outstanding

No arrests have been made, with witness statements still being obtained and crucial forensic evidence, including the post-mortem report, still outstanding. Once the investigation is complete, the docket will be submitted to the Senior State Prosecutor for a decision.

SAPS said it is aware of speculation circulating about the incident but urged the public not to spread unverified information that could prejudice the investigation. Police added that all information relevant to the matter will be assessed as part of the ongoing probe to determine the full circumstances surrounding Khaeane’s death.

Government pledges justice

Meanwhile, Free State Premier MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae visited the Khaeane family at their home to offer her condolences and assure them that the matter would be thoroughly investigated.

“What I can promise you is that the police will investigate this matter without any fear or favour and justice will be served. No one is above the law irrespective of one’s standing in society,” the Letsoha-Mathae said.

According to a statement by the Free State provincial government, the deceased’s mother, Maphehello Khaeane, appealed to the premier and Jabu Mbalula Free State MEC for Community Safety, Roads, and Transport to ensure justice for her son.

Mbalula echoed these sentiments, pledging that provincial authorities would closely monitor the police investigation to ensure absolute transparency and accountability.
