Policeman to appear in Mbombela court after vehicle crashes into wall

A Mbombela family claim they tried to help a police officer after he crashed into their wall, but say he became aggressive, leading to his detention.

A policeman is expected to make his first appearance in the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court tomorrow after being detained in the Nelspruit police cells for alleged reckless and negligent driving along Suiderkruis Street in Mbombela on Friday night.

Lowvelder reports the a car, allegedly driven by the officer, drove into the corner of a wall, causing extensive damage around 21:30.

The owner of the house posted on social media that he heard a loud crash followed by his electric fencing alarm going off.

“I rushed outside and discovered that a vehicle had driven straight through my corner wall in Suiderkruis Street. The passenger fled the scene, leaving the driver still in the car,” wrote Peet Mocke.

Mocke and his son checked on the driver and asked if he was okay. An ambulance and the security arrived at the scene, later joined by police officers.

Driver allegedly aggressive

Despite the family trying to help, the man allegedly became aggressive. The family even offered him a blanket as he appeared cold.

“The driver began accusing us of being racist and continued to verbally provoke and intimidate my family. This behaviour carried on for hours, accompanied by a strong smell of liquor in the air,” said Mocke.

The driver allegedly refused to take responsibility for the damage and instead played the victim.

Police confirm suspect’s identity

It was only after police arrived that it was discovered he was attached to the Ehlanzeni District office of the SAPS. Mocke thanked members of Isecure and responding officers for intervening.

Mpumalanga police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane confirmed the suspect is a police officer and was detained.

“He has been detained and the investigating officer is expected to meet with the complainant and take a full statement regarding the incident,” said Ndubane.

She added that additional charges might be laid against the officer.
