Press freedom: Platforms for journalists to make their voices heard
World Press Freedom Day 2021 – celebrated on May 3 – presents a number of opportunities for sector stakeholders to get involved in burning issues facing the media.
The South African National Editors’ Forum (Sanef) tomorrow (Friday) hosts the second of four webinars aimed at promoting media ethics. These webinars – which will culminate in an online ethics conference on May 15 – give participants the opportunity to help shape the journalism ethics recommendations that will be discussed at the conference. The first webinar was on April 21 but journalists, editors, media trainers and other stakeholders can still register for the other three.
Webinar 2: Using ethics as a tool for change
When: April 23, 3pm-5pm.
Themes: ‘Strengthening ethics codes and principles’ and ‘Strengthening the regulators’.
Moderated by: Sanef Media freedom chairperson Mary Papayya, with expert input from Wits University professor Franz Kruger, Aidan White of the Ethical Journalism Network and Press Council of South Africa executive director Latiefa Mobara.

Webinar 3: Technological impact on ethics
When: April 28, 3pm-5pm.
Themes: ‘Safety of journalists’ and ‘Strengthening continuing professional development’.
Moderated by: Sanef education and training committee chairperson Tshamano Makhadi, with input from International Women’s Media Foundation executive director Elisa Muñoz and Africa Check executive director Noko Makgato.
