Pretoria head-on collision: 7 dead, 8 injured

The jaws of life had to be used to free some of the injured and deceased from the wrecks.

A head-on collision involving a minibus taxi and a Mercedes sedan resulted in the death of seven people on Saturday morning. Eight others were injured.

According to Tshwane EMS spokesperson Charles Mabaso, the department responded to the accident on WF Nkomo Street in Saulsville, Pretoria.

“Emergency services arrived on scene to find multiple patients still trapped in the minibus taxi.”

Three men were declared dead on the scene. They were all from the minibus taxi and firefighters had to use the ‘jaws of life’ to extricate their bodies.

Mabaso added that a female patient was extricated from the light motor vehicle (a black Mercedes Benz sedan) and transported to Kalafong Hospital in a critical condition. A male patient from the same vehicle was transported with minor to moderate injuries.

“Four of the six patients transported to Kalofong Hospital in a critical condition later succumbed to their injuries, bringing the total number of deceased to seven.

“Between the two vehicles, a total of 15 patients were involved.

“The eight that survived are receiving medical treatment at Kalafong, Steve Biko and Pretoria West hospitals.”

The cause of the accident is unknown at this stage.
