The South African Insurance Association (SAIA) has warned the public about the dangers and insurance risks linked to storing fuel at home, reports Southern Courier.

This comes as some consumers have begun storing large volumes of petrol amid uncertainty over future fuel supply.

Rising petrol and diesel prices have also contributed to increased fuel hoarding.

SAIA technical expert Mosidi Shomang said municipalities allow only up to 25 litres of fuel to be stored at home, mainly for small equipment such as a lawnmower.

She warned that exceeding the allowed limit is against regulations and could have serious consequences.

She also highlighted that insurers may reject claims if losses result from illegal or non-compliant fuel storage.

The association advises residents to store no more than 25 litres of petrol, keep it in well-ventilated areas, and place it far from ignition sources and electrical equipment.

SAIA continues to urge the public to prioritise safety and follow regulations to avoid unnecessary risks.
