Pump station repairs complete after Durban Harbour sewage leak

Repairs to the Mahatma Gandhi Pump Station were completed yesterday, November 11.

Spokesperson for the eThekwini Municipality, Msawakhe Mayisela said their teams will work through the night to ensure the pumps are functional by Friday morning.

This follows an uproar on social media after a sewage leak caused a stink at the Port of Durban this week.

“The pumps had to be repaired after they were severely damaged by load-shedding,” said Msawake.

While swimming at the beaches is deemed safe, diving and fishing are prohibited.

“The City constantly monitors levels of E. coli at all beaches. Results have consistently shown that the water quality is safe for recreational activities. However, the water at the Port of Durban is of poor quality and activities such as diving and fishing are still prohibited, in the interest of public safety. The City and the port will inform the public once the water quality has improved,” said Msawake.

“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience this situation has caused. We are doing everything in our power to return the situation to normalcy,” he said.
