R101 crash: Male motorist dies after vehicle lands under truck in Limpopo
“A passenger in the sedan was lucky to escape with minor injuries,” says ER 24's corporate communications manager Werner Vermaak.
POLOKWANE – A collision between a sedan and truck transporting pallets claimed the life of a male motorist on Monday (August 2) afternoon.
The incident happened along the R101 road approximately 40km south of Polokwane.
According to the corporate communications manager of ER24, Werner Vermaak, paramedics arrived at the scene shortly after 12:00 to find a sedan wedged underneath the back of a truck. “Upon assessment, they found that the male driver of the vehicle showed no signs of life. He was later declared dead on the scene.
“A passenger in the same vehicle was fortunate to have sustained only minor injuries and as treated on the scene before he was transported to a nearby hospital,” Vermaak explained.
The media liaison officer for the Department of Transport confirmed the incident and said that a 30-year-old man passed away on the scene. He added that the exact cause of the collision is not yet known but reckless and negligent driving has not been ruled out.
Transport and Community Safety MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya earlier cautioned road users about the escalating number of fatal accidents on Limpopo roads. She cited reckless driving as the leading cause of most incidents and encouraged motorists to reduce their speed and not to overtake recklessly.
