R3.8m in smuggled goods recovered by police at Lebombo border
Police arrested a 37-year-old man at the Lebombo Border Post after he was allegedly found in possession of R3.8m worth of tekkies on Thursday, December 11.
Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Brig Selvy Mohlala, said the goods were allegedly smuggled into South Africa from Mozambique.
“Police at the border post noticed a suspicious-looking truck driven by a certain man. The truck was coming from Mozambique into the country and police then conducted a search. They discovered various brands of sneakers inside,” said Mohlala.
“The man, who is a Zimbabwean national, was arrested and charged with possession of counterfeit goods.”
Mohlala said the man is expected to appear in the Komatipoort Magistrate’s Court on Monday, December 13.
“The truck, which is worth about R3.5m, was also confiscated as it was reportedly used in the commission of crime,” he said.
The provincial police commissioner, Lt Gen Semakaleng Manamela, has welcomed the man’s arrest as well as the seizure of the illicit items and the confiscation of the vehicle.
