The City of Tshwane notified residents today of immediate water restrictions being implemented following an urgent meeting with Rand Water.

According to Utilities and Regional Operations Co-ordination MMC Themba Fosi, the City of Tshwane held an emergency meeting this morning with representatives from Rand Water, the City of Johannesburg and the City of Ekurhuleni to address a severe strain on the Rand Water supply system, which is on the verge of collapse.

“Rand Water’s total water storage has plummeted below 30%, necessitating immediate interventions to mitigate the crisis. As a result, Rand Water has closed its Brakfontein and Rooihuiskraal supply points with the possibility of affecting large parts of Tshwane.”

Fosi said in response, the city is implementing measures to address the escalating situation.

“Effective immediately, we will be closing inlets at Heights HL, Garsfontein, and Kasia, while further restricting access to Klapperkop.

“These measures are essential to manage demand and preserve our water resources.”

He said it is important to note that, as of now, no suburbs within Tshwane have been directly affected.

“However, we remain vigilant and will continue to closely monitor the situation to prevent total disruption to water supply services.

“What has transpired in Joburg over the past two weeks has come as a serious concern to Tshwane. It is evident that Rand Water systems are under severe pressure.”

Fosi said the fact that they are struggling to restore water in Joburg indicates that the entire water supply system (which Tshwane shares) is under strain.

The city appeals to all Tshwane residents to use water sparingly.

“We are implementing citywide water restrictions, urging residents to stick to the essentials only.”

This includes refraining from watering gardens and filling pools. Residents are urged to take shorter showers.
