Rapist sentenced to 27 years imprisonment
The Upington High Court on Friday sentenced a 31-year-old man to 27 years in prison for rape and attempted murder.
Simon Rampagane, 31, raped a 34-year-old woman on July 6, 2014 at about 2am in Rosedale, said Lieutenant Sergio Kock.
“The woman was in an outside toilet at her house when she was accosted by Rampagane. He choked the victim and hit her with a stone over her head before raping her in the yard. After the rape, the victim was assaulted once again by the accused before he fled,” added Kock.
The victim informed the police, and the suspect, who was known to her, was arrested hours later. The accused remained in custody up until his sentencing.
Rampagane was sentenced to 22 years for the rape and 10 years for the attempted murder. Five of the 10 years for the attempted murder will run concurrent with the 22 years for the rape.
Earlier this month, a man was sentenced to life in prison by the Durban Regional Court for raping a 12-year-old girl.
The man, 41, was also sentenced to 10 years for attempted murder, said KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Thulani Zwane.
The court heard how the man raped the girl, who was his neighbour, on December 19, 2013 in Cato Manor.
“The victim reported the incident to her mother that the accused called her to his house and repeatedly raped her,” said Zwane.
