Road blocks to continue while people queue for food in the South Coast [WATCH]

Although the looting of shops is under control, the main concern is getting basic essentials and petrol.

Some shops opened this morning but were closed before midday.

There have been reports of shops only allowing 10 in at a time, or aren’t allowing anymore customers in, as they have reached their capacity.

Towns such as Hibberdene and Port Shepstone are chaotic, and people are asked to keep away if they don’t need to purchase any basic items.

It is believed that wholesalers are allowing spaza shops to buy stock so the community can purchase from these outlets. People are asked to shop sparingly, and only for basic essential items.

It is advised to best stay away from shopping centres.

There also appears to be no refuse collections taking place in some areas.

Councillor Selvan Chetty, Chief Whip of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM), said community roadblocks set up by both the Tweni and Albersville Community Police Forum is part of the security plan and strategy adopted by RNM.

“We are there lawfully and with the blessing of Saps General Major General Sethenya Nxamagele and RNM’s Mayor Nomusa Cynthia Mqwebu and Law Enforcement officers.”

He said they will not dismantle their community defence structures and please remain in positions. “We are responsible for defending our own communities.”
