Robber with toy gun shot by police with real gun

A suspect has been shot and injured by police after he allegedly helped his accomplices rob a man with a toy gun on the N4 in Witbank, Mpumalanga.

Witbank police officers were patrolling the N4 highway, a well-known as a hotspot for hijackings and robberies, when the sound of a man’s screams alerted them to a nearby bush, Witbank News reported.

The two police officers rushed towards the bush next to the highway, and six men came running out of the bush. As the police gave chase to the fleeing suspects, one of the men reportedly turned around pointing what looked like a firearm at the two police.

It is believed one of the policemen quickly drew his weapon and fired a shot at the suspect, wounding his leg. The object pointed at the two police officers turned out to be a toy gun.

The suspects allegedly fled with the victim’s cellphone, money and identification documents. The injured robber was taken to hospital, and police are still searching for the five suspects.

In a separate incident, two men were arrested in connection with a robbery in Mphusheni Reserve, Umbumbulu, in KwaZulu-Natal last month.

The men allegedly accosted three women at gunpoint in their tuck shop and robbed them of three cellphones and an undisclosed amount of cash. The suspects fled on foot, and members of the community alerted a passing patrol van, police said.

Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said police arrested the men and recovered three cellphones, stolen cash, and a toy gun that was used in the robbery.
