Robbery ruled out as motive in Panayiotou murder
Robbery has been ruled out as a motive in the disappearance and murder of Port Elizabeth teacher Jayde Panayiotou, police said on Thursday said.
This after the two suspects, Thando Siyoli, 31, and an unidentified 28-year-old man were arrested in connection with Panayiotou’s murder during the week.
According to a statement by Eastern Cape police spokesperson Brigadier Miranda Mills, Siyoli was arrested in the KwaZakele township, in Port Elizabeth earlier this week. The second suspect was arrested last night in Uitenhage.
Siyoli appeared in the Port Elizabeth Magistrates’ Court this morning and will remain in custody until his next appearance on May 7. The 28-year-old is expected to appear in the same court on Monday.
Panayiotou’s body was found by police helicopters outside Uitenhage after she had gone missing from her home in the Kabega Park area last week. An undisclosed amount of cash was allegedly withdrawn from her account shortly after she went missing.
Following speculation that one of the suspects may have been a family member of Panayiotou’s, police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said police could not release further information regarding the suspects.
“We cannot confirm that [one of the suspects is a family member]. For now we are sticking to what is in the statement that was released,” she added.
