Robbery suspect shot dead near Cape Town International

A case of attempted robbery and an inquest docket are being investigated after one of three suspects was shot dead during a robbery near Cape Town International Airport petrol station on this afternoon.

Western Cape police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk said three suspects tried to rob the contents of a cigarettes delivery vehicle at a petrol station near Cape Town International Airport.

“A shootout ensued between the suspects and security officers. One of the suspects was fatally wounded, one injured and the other one fled the scene and is still at large,” Van Wyk added.

He said police were still on the scene.

Last month, police arrested two armed suspects who robbed a vehicle delivering cigarettes in Muizenberg, Western Cape.

Four armed suspects robbed the vehicle in Muizenberg at about 11am, spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Andrè Traut said.

He said just after the robbery took place, it was broadcast on police radios, and police were alerted to look out for a white getaway vehicle driving in the direction of Mitchells Plain.

“While police vehicles in the vicinity were on the lookout for a white Nissan LDV driving in the direction of Mitchells Plain, members of [the] Flying Squad spotted the vehicle on Baden Powell Drive. The occupants were apprehended and the stolen cigarettes were retrieved,” Traut added.

The two suspects who were in the vehicle were arrested, and the other two suspects remained at large.
