RTI officers arrest pastor for alleged drunk driving in KZN
A spiritual cleansing trip to St Lucia Beach ends in a police cell after traffic officials intercept a motorist travelling with his congregation.
A pastor’s journey to St Lucia Beach for a baptism ended in a police cell after he was arrested for allegedly driving drunk earlier today (July 19), reports The Witness.
The incident unfolded on the R618 near St Lucia when Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) officers pulled over the pastor, who was travelling with members of his congregation this morning.
Officers detect strong alcohol smell
According to the Department of Transport, officers became suspicious after detecting a strong smell of alcohol coming from the vehicle during the stop.
A breathalyser test was administered, which reportedly returned a reading of 0.360% blood alcohol content, well above the legal limit. The pastor was immediately arrested for drunk driving.
The pastor responded by citing the Bible, John 1:9: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
RTI operations net 33 motorists
RTI officials confirmed that the arrest forms part of ongoing operations targeting drunk driving over the weekend.
RTI has already arrested 33 motorists for drunk driving this weekend.
