Runner dies after collapsing on Comrades route

Mzamo Mthembu was rushed to hospital after he collapsed.

The Hollywoodbets Athletics Club has expressed its sadness over the death of one of its members on the Comrades Marathon route yesterday. Mzamo Mthembu collapsed near Pinetown on the M13.

Morgan Shandu, operations manager for Hollywoodbets and president of the Hollywoodbets Athletics Club, said he was saddened and shocked by the news of Mthembu’s passing.

He also offered his condolences to Mthembu’s family and friends.

“It’s a dark day. It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Hollywoodbets Athletics Club athlete Mzamo Mthembu (from our club’s Toti branch).

“He was running the Comrades Marathon yesterday when he had complications along the route and collapsed in Pinetown. He was taken to Westville Hospital, where he sadly passed away.

“We send condolences to the entire Mthembu family, his friends, and of course his fellow running colleagues at the Hollywoodbets Athletics Club. May his soul rest in peace,” Shandu said.
