SA woman arrested after disturbance on Canada flight
A South African woman has been arrested after she caused a disturbance on an Air Canada flight and forced the plane to be diverted to the Halifax airport.
Angel Babhekile Johansson had been a passenger on Air Canada Flight 869 from London, England, to Toronto, The Chronicle Herald reported.
Johansson, from Sandhurst in Sandton, Johannesburg, was arrested after the plane landed at Halifax Stanfield International Airport on Wednesday.
Video footage shows a handcuffed Johansson being escorted by police.
Johansson was said to have remained in police custody overnight and appeared in the Dartmouth Provincial Court on Thursday, where she faced various charges.
One of the charges was reportedly under the Aeronautics Act, for allegedly “engaging in behaviour that endangered the safety or security of an aircraft in flight”.
Johansson also faces five criminal code charges, including three counts of endangering the safety of an aircraft by committing an assault, single counts of assault with a weapon (a water bottle) and causing a disturbance by screaming and swearing.
It had been alleged that Johansson had assaulted two female flight attendants.
Johansson was later released on R10 000 bail. She will be staying with relatives in Oakville, Ontario, after agreeing to surrender her South African passport and report to police in person or by phone every Friday, beginning December 26.
The matter is expected to return to court on January 22.
