Sabie family held at gunpoint, kidnapped during robbery

A family was left in a secluded area after being robbed and kidnapped.

A sleeping Sabie family was woken up by three intruders, armed with guns, in the early hours on Friday.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdhluli says the incident occurred between 02:00 and 03:00, when the family – a mother, father and one-year-old child – woke up to three men pointing firearms at them.

Mdhluli says the intruders told the family to remain calm and threatened to kill them if they did not co-operate. He adds that they then took the family’s belongings before demanding the keys to their Toyota Fortuner.

“After loading the stolen items, the victims were forced into the vehicle with their [child],” says Mdhluli.

After driving around for a while, the intruders abandoned the family unharmed in a secluded area along the R37 Sabie/Hendriksdal road, leaving with bakkie and stolen items.

He says the victims walked until they got assistance.

Law enforcement agencies, including members of the SANDF, SAPS and tracking companies, were alerted to the incident.

The bakkie was traced and recovered in Goba in Nkomazi at 06:20.

Police are investigating, says Mdhluli.
